In this digital world, the reach of technological innovation continues to grow, changing all industries as it evolves. The
In healthcare, technology is increasingly playing a role in almost all processes, from patient registration to data monitoring, from lab tests to self-care tools.

Following are the some advancement in healthcare that has emerged due to digitization:- People Awareness:-

healthcare industry like every other industry is also changing due to
advancement and development in medicine, technology and pharmaceutical.
Innovations in
treatment and technology are revolutionizing how we care for one another, with the goal of
saving life or improving quality of live.
Every big healthcare
organization, invests a major part of their revenue on research and development in order cope up
with the changing market and technology and to have their sustainable competitive advantage
over the competitors.
The use of internet make people educate and aware about adopting healthy
lifestyle, and disease prevention. News related new developments; achievements and innovations
in the field of healthcare can be easily disseminated using Internet. There are various web
portals, applications and websites where people can get the information about healthcare
organizations (hospitals, pharmaceutical companies etc), healthcare professionals, and
medicines. They can keep track of their own health by using various healthcare and fitness
application on their Smartphone. Information can be access by people from anywhere and at
time. People can read experts blog and the review about hospitals and healthcare professionals
before booking an appointment. As per their experience and satisfaction with the services being
provided by hospitals and healthcare professionals they can give rating and write comments on
social media and public portals.
Earlier organizations can make statement regarding their products which can be invalid or in
actual untrue. But due to digitization concept of digital authenticity came, now companies cannot
make any invalid or untrue statement. Digitization provides the access on intelligent agents.
Consumers can compare the feature, price, quality, advantage, disadvantage of the different
products at one time. Thus the have multiple alternative and from these alternatives they can
choose the best alternative as per their requirements.
Imaging Techniques and Wearable Devices :-Digitization has changed the healthcare imaging
techniques X-ray, Ultrasounds, MRI, CT, DXA, Bone Scans, Mammograms etc. have changed
the medical fell drastically. These technologies makes it easier to diagnose diseases earlier and
for catching problems that have not yet caused any symptoms through regular screening tests.
Wearable devices in healthcare are becoming popular in the healthcare industry. Consumers can
have early disease warnings on these devices, which reduces the potential of costly stay in
hospital. Therefore the use of wearable devices in healthcare is expected to grow by 8% till 2019.
E-commerce/ Online Health Retailing:- Some companies are selling medicines to customers
and businesses online. They have portals for customer order tracking. They focus on customer
loyalty and improve customer satisfaction by allowing people to browse and purchase products
whenever they want. Thus using digital media companies boost profitability and lower costs by
selling products directly to customers and businesses. They cut down the middle man, streamline
business processes and reduce operating expenses. Thus it become easy for companies to keep
record of their customers buying habits and on the basis of their previous purchases companies
are provide them tailor made or customize offers and discounts on different products. In India
there is huge scope of online health retailing since healthcare industry is expected to grow at a
CAGR of 17% during 2011-2020. It also has potential to reach and target 70% of Indian
population living in villages.
Drug Development:- Drug development techniques are also changed due to advancement in
technology eg:- newer bio technical drugs which effects the DNA of diseases.
Electronic Health and Mobile Health:– Electronic health means the use of information and communication satellite, patient monitors etc. for health services and information. Mobile health is a subset of electronic health. Mobile health means practice of medicine and public health supported by mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and PDAs. These devices are used for collecting community and clinical health data, delivery of healthcare information to patients, researchers and practitioners, ability to diagnose and track diseases, real-time monitoring of patient viral sign, direct provision of care to patients and expanded access to ongoing medical education and training for health workers. .
Market Research report estimates that the global mobile health market will reach $20.7 billion by 2019. As it has emerged in recent years as largely an application for developing countries where there is rapid rise in mobile phone penetration in low-income people. Thus mobile health improving the capacity of health system in such countries by providing quality and easily accessible healthcare and health-related information.
Telemedicine :- In telemedicine, information technology and telecommunication is used to provide clinical health care from a distance. Thus telemedicine eliminates distance barriers and improved the access to medical services that would often not be consistently available in isolated communities and remote regions. Thus patient can receive care from doctors or specialists far away without the patient having to travel to visit them and in cost effective way. It is also used to save lives in critical care and emergency situation.
It can also eliminate the possible transmission of infectious parasites or diseases between patients and medical staff. The downsides of telemedicine includes an increased risk of error when medical services are delivered in the absence of a registered professional and increased risk that protected health information may be compromised through electronic storage and transmission.
Patient Portals:- These are healthcare-related online applications that allow patients to interact and communicate with their healthcare provider, such as physicians and hospitals. Some portal enable patients to request prescription refills online, order contact lenses and eyeglasses, pay
bills, access medical records, review lab results and schedule medical appointment. It allows patients to directly communicate with their healthcare providers by asking questions, leaving comments or sending e-mail messages.
Electronic Health Records:- Earlier very few hospitals were using an electronic health record.
By 2013, about 80 percent of hospitals started using EHR into their organization. Earlier we had
such disparate systems, means one system that did order, one did pharmacy and one did
documentation. In such systems it was difficult to extract insightful information and facts as the
data was distributed. Then companies started keeping department wise data, there was different
program for every department. Data of one department was difficult to share with other
department. But proper co-ordination among the different departments of an organization is must
for effective and efficient decision making.
Now a day, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems are being used by healthcare
Integrated systems have allowed more integrated and efficient care. It is sophisticated software solution that reduces the pressure and workload of the managers and provides accurate, timely information for taking
appropriate business decisions based on the data.
Use of computers, web, mobiles and other digital media in healthcare, generate massive amount of data on daily basis. These data is of no use if it cannot deliver knowledge. That is why data mining is gaining wide acceptance in today’s world. Healthcare organizations are also using data mining as an important managerial decision making tool. They are extracting hidden patterns from data which were previously unknown and potentially useful for the growth of business.
organizations which are backed up by a centralized database. These
It makes information sharing among
departments easy and less time consuming. Healthcare organizations can keep track of their
customers in the database using this data they can do demand forecast and take the decisions
related to resource allocation, production, marketing, budget etc.
3D Printing:- The concept of 3D printer has brought a revolution in the healthcare industry.
Many of the 3D printed solutions are still in their experimental stages.
generate customized replacement parts for human body or organs containing capabilities beyond
It has the potential to
what human biology ordinary provides. 3D printed solutions are cost effective. It is the process
of building solid 3D object from digital model, using additive processes in which successive
layers of material are assembled on top of one another to build the desired object.
Physicians can use patients-specific data to capture, manipulate and ultimately apply physical
solutions of all sizes and shapes through 3D printing. Thus digitization makes personalized
medicine easy, as patient need unique parts that can be rapidly and simply manufactured.
procedure surgeons can plan complex surgeries with the CT scan data of a patient’s bone, blood
vessels or other organs, converted to a 3D-printable digital file that can be manipulated and
studied. Thus such digital technologies can reduce operating time, lower risks of error or
complications and produce better outcomes for patients through the use of 3D-printed surgical
models and tools.
Experts have developed 3D printed skin for burn victims and patient having skin infections.
Scientists have developed a 3D printer for stem cells, (cells that can earlier develop into many
different kinds of tissue in the body, can now be printed, at least in the lab), skull (in march 2013
surgeons replaced 75% of a man’s skull with a plastic one made up by 3d printer), organs like
liver, heart and kidney, tissues, blood vessels and sheets of cardiac tissue that “beat” like real
heart, skin, bones and cartilage. Using these printers cancer cell can be printed in order to
studying cancer. In the research phase, scientists at Princeton University have used 3D printing
tools to create a bionic ear (can hear radio frequencies far beyond the range of normal human
capability in a project to explore the feasibility of combining electronics with tissue).
In next10 years, it’s highly likely that 3D printed medical models and custom surgical guides will
be standard procedure for a verity of operations, including heart surgery, jaw surgery, knee
replacement, hip replacements, cranial implants, shoulder operation, spinal procedures and many
Earlier due to financial obstacles or the unique circumstances of a condition, millions of people
across the globe are unable to undergo critical surgeries. Now in some cases 3D printing is
helping to remove those obstacles. Thus it is enabling doctors to treat more patients without
sacrificing results.
This is how healthcare industry is changing its operating style with the emergence of new digital technology. All the leading companies in an industry have achieved a high level of quality at a competitive price, a focus on quality and price alone cannot keep a company competitive. Quality and price then becomes a common expected factor. Digitization makes companies to use automated systems which help in reducing cycle and lead time. Thus companies can compete on basis of time and flexibility. Proper recording, collection and organization of data in databases provide easy access on useful information for making strategic decision. Easy internet access and affordability of mobile devices allows major portion of population to make use of services like electronic health, mobile health and telemedicine from anywhere at any time. Technological issues which include safety of information and unauthorized access over the personal data of individual or businesses are some of the limitations of digitization.
Big Data aggregation and analysis tools having ability to handle tremendous amount of data generated on daily basis and ability to extract insightful facts that could be used for business, will be the next expected big advancement in the healthcare.
